The reason this trick works is that no matter what they say, “deal,” or “double deal,” the cards are still being placed onto the new deck in the same order. You can try this with the card facing up to see how this works.

The interesting thing is that some kids, usually elementary school age, will immediately understand how this trick works, while adults will remain completely dumbfounded, until you explain to them how it works.
